Psychological assessment is a comprehensive and thorough process of identifying one’s psychological and/or cognitive strengths and weaknesses, as well as providing insight into current distress by utilizing a test battery which typically consists of IQ test, self-report measures, and other performance measures. The purpose of psychological assessments is to provide clients with a deeper understanding of the current distress they are experiencing and to actively search for solutions to enhance their lives. Some of the reasons clients might seek out psychological testing includes testing for ADHD, struggling at school or at work, or repeatedly experiencing interpersonal relationship concerns with romantic partners or others.

What is Psychological Assessment?

Types of Psychological Assessment

ADHD Evalution

Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that typically begins in childhood and persists into adulthood that includes primary traits, including hyperactivity and impulsivity. ADHD can be quite debilitating throughout one’s life if it is not detected early because of the immense impact it often has on those with such neurodevelopmental condition. ADHD evaluation can help identify a detailed plan to work around your cognitive strengths and weaknesses and excel in areas of life that you desire.

ADHD evaluation starts with a clinical interview to identify specific problems and discomfort the client is currently experiencing. In addition to the clinical interview, ADHD evaluation typically includes completing a collateral interview who knows you well, performance tests such as the CPT-3, and standard IQ test.

Neuropsychological Evaluation

Neuropsychological evaluation is a comprehensive assessment that focuses on measuring one’s more detailed and advanced sets of cognitive functions, such as executive functioning, attention, and memory. This is completed with using a range of psychological measures, including performance-based measures and self-report measures. Neuropsychological evaluation includes ADHD & Autism evaluation, as well as assessments for dementia or cognitive decline after a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), concussion, etc.

Intellectual Assessment (IQ testing)

Intellectual assessment or IQ testing solely measures you or your child’s intellectual functioning. This can be helpful to get a basic understanding of where your level of intelligence lies and how this might be impacting your everyday functioning.

Psychoeducational Evaluation

Psychoeducational evaluation is a type of psychological assessment that measures your child or adolescent’s academic achievement profile (as well as intelligence), and it is typically given to identify any specific learning disorders that might be getting in the way of your child’s school performance. Specific learning disorders can be indicated in the following areas: math, writing, or reading. If you are suspecting that your child might have a specific learning disorder, this evaluation can help you find the answer and provide you with a treatment plan.

Emotional/Personality Assessment

Emotional/Personality testing can be helpful for those who are currently experiencing signifiant distress in their daily lives, relationships, and other areas of life. Moreover, it can help you gain more insight into your psychological profile and help identify productive ways to tackle your unique concerns that are getting in the way of optimizing your life.

On the first day of testing, you will meet with Dr. Audrey Kim for the initial interview and begin psychological assessment. On the second day of testing, you will finish rest of the testing that you didn’t get to on the first meeting. Overall, administration of assessment will take about 4-6 hours, depending on the referral questions and the type of psychological assessment you are completing. Testing days usually include filling up self-report questionnaires, as well as completing performance-based tasks to measure your cognitive and/or emotional functioning.

From the last day of testing, you can expect anywhere between 2-3 weeks to receive the test results and meet with Dr. Audrey for the feedback session.
